13. Mr. PLUMMER observed 402 transits for time determination in 1897, and the axis of the tag sit instrument was levelled 171 times, .., upon each day when observations were made. The rate of the standard clocks are given in the accompanying tables (III and IV), and are compared with ta rates given by the formula at the head of the tables. No alteration has been made to either clock August during the year, and although it was found necessary to clean the contact springs of the sidered standard clock on November 29th, this was effected without in any way interfering with the going
the clock.
The errors of the Time Ball are given in table V. The time ball has twice been under repartember namely, from March 5 to 10, when the base of the piston was found to have been shattered, and a 194 brass base was fixed to it by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company in place of the original essa iron one; and again from July 13 to 19, when the zinc tube within the ball was found to be crumpled up and pressing against the must. On July 7 the lock was under repair. There were five failus tober of the time ball in 1897, viz., on March 11 owing to an error of the workmen in centering the nex brass base of the piston; on June 23, in consequence of the discharging spring being too weak; July 6 because the tooth of the lock (being much worn) allowed the piston to jamb against th opposite side of the cylinder; on July 8, because the Assistant failed to raise the piston high enougvember to free the tooth of the lock; and on July 12, for the reason already given as rendering the repai necessary on the days immediately following. The ball is not droppel on Government holidays on one other occasion (Sunday, May 9) in consequence of the illness of two Assistants it was inte mitted. It was successfully dropped 332 times in this year. The probable error was in Januar ±033, in February ±019, in March ±016, in April ±012, in May ±016, in June ±0,713, in lo ±0:09, in August ±013, in September ±010, in October 2014, in November 2016, in Decem +012.
